Overview

From 1 July 2026, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) will enforce compulsory registration of all branded SMS sender names through the SMS Sender ID Register. If your alphanumeric sender ID, also known as an Alpha Tag, is not registered, it will appear as “Unverified” in recipients’ messages.

This change helps reduce scam SMS activity and prevents fraudsters from impersonating trusted brands. To align with these regulatory requirements, Alpha Tag registrations must now be submitted through the Tickets menu in the AdviserLogic Help Centre rather than through SMS settings.

⚠️Important Dates

  • Sender ID Registration opens: 30 November 2025

  • Unregistered sender IDs show as “Unverified”: 1 July 2026

We recommend preparing early by reviewing any legacy sender IDs and confirming your authorised contact details are up to date on the ABR.

What is an Alpha Tag?

An Alpha Tag, or alphanumeric sender ID, is the name displayed at the top of an SMS message instead of a mobile number, for example, your practice name.

Under the ACMA Sender ID rules, these identifiers must be registered and approved before they can be used for branded SMS messaging.

⚠️Important

If unregistered from 1 July 2026, your sender ID will appear as “Unverified”, which may reduce client trust and engagement.

Sender ID validation rules

As of the date of this article, the ACMA permits the registration of alphanumeric sender IDs only if they adhere to the following guidelines:

  • They must be 2-11 characters long.

  • The can only include characters 32–126 from the ASCII decimal codes

  • They cannot solely consist of “restricted” words published on the ACMA’s website.
Examples of restricted words are “verify”, “notice”, “important”, “banking”, “alert",
or anything that can be interpreted as impersonation of trusted entities. You can
find the complete list of words here.

  • They can consist of letters, numbers, and symbols (standard ASCII), but cannot be only
    numbers.

  • They cannot contain a space or underscore at the beginning or end.

  • They cannot contain the word ‘Unverified’.

  • They cannot be offensive, deceptive, or misleading.

  • They must have a valid use case (e.g. your registered business name, company name,
    trademark, or domain name).

Who Can Request an Alpha Tag Registration?

Only users assigned the Practice Champion or Practice Principal role can submit an Alpha Tag registration ticket.

This restriction applies because the process requires:

  • Official business identity details

  • An authorised representative listed on the Australian Business Register (ABR)

  • Formal confirmation of regulatory compliance

If you are a support staff member, please coordinate with your Practice Champion or Practice Principal to gather the required information and submit the request.

How to Submit Your Alpha Tag Registration Request

⚠️Important

Changing your sender ID may impact how clients recognise your messages. If you update or replace your Alpha Tag for compliance, notify your clients so they continue to trust and engage with your SMS communications.

Ensuring your Alpha Tag is registered keeps your practice compliant with ACMA requirements and helps maintain client confidence in your messaging.

Open AdviserLogic and select the headphones icon in the top right corner of your screen to access the Help Centre.

From the Help Centre home page, scroll down to navigate to the Tickets menu, and select Alpha Tag Registration for SMS Profile Setup from the top of the ticket’s menu. You will be presented with fields requiring your business and authorised representative details.

Enter the SMS sender name (Alpha Tag) that will appear to recipients instead of a phone number. This should reflect your business or practice name and be easily recognisable to your clients. Ensure the name complies with SMS requirements, as it will be reviewed and approved before use.

Enter your Australian Business Number (ABN) in the relevant field. Ensure you include the full ABN exactly as registered on the ABR.

Then provide your Business Address, including street, suburb, postcode, and state, followed by your Business Website if applicable.

Enter your Telephone Number for the business. This should be a general business contact number and must not be tied to an individual. This ensures compliance with registration requirements.

Provide the First Name and Last Name of the authorised representative. This person should be listed on the ABR, such as a director or legal representative. This ensures the registration can be validated correctly.

Enter the authorised representative’s Email Address exactly as it appears on the ABR record. Using a different email may result in delays or rejection of your registration. Then enter their Telephone Number, ensuring it is a direct contact number rather than a shared or reception number.

Review the confirmation section and select Yes to confirm that the authorised representative is aware of and agrees to the registration.

Once all required fields are completed, click Create ticket to submit your registration request.

You can monitor its progress through the Messages area within the Help Centre.

Once submitted, AdviserLogic and our SMS provider will review your information. After confirmation, we will lodge the application with ACMA on your behalf.

You will receive a Confirmation email from ACMA within a few days. Once you have received the confirmation, you may update the ticket or email it directly to AdviserLogic support.

⚠️Important

After submitting your request, regularly check your junk or spam folder for the ACMA confirmation email, as it may be filtered by your email provider.

If You Prefer Not to Register an Alpha Tag

If your practice chooses not to register an Alpha Tag, you may still send SMS using a mobile number–based SMS profile. This can be configured directly within SMS Settings in AdviserLogic and does not require Sender ID registration.
