General - How to Take a Screenshot

Learn how to capture, save, and share screenshots on Windows and macOS devices for troubleshooting and support.

Overview

Screenshots are a quick and effective way to capture information displayed on your screen. In AdviserLogic, screenshots are commonly used when reporting issues, sharing error messages, or documenting workflows for the Support team.

Modern operating systems include built-in screenshot and screen recording tools, allowing you to capture and annotate images without installing additional software.

This article explains the latest methods for taking screenshots on Windows and macOS devices.


Windows Users

Access

Screenshot tools are built directly into Windows 10 and Windows 11 through the Snipping Tool application.

You can access the tool by:

  • Pressing Windows + Shift + S

  • Searching for Snipping Tool from the Start Menu

Use the Snipping Tool Shortcut

Press Windows + Shift + S on your keyboard. Your screen will dim slightly and the Snipping Tool toolbar will appear at the top of the screen.

You can then select one of the available snip types:

Snip Type

Description

Rectangular Snip

Capture a rectangular section of the screen

Freeform Snip

Draw a custom shape around the area

Window Snip

Capture a single application window

Full-screen Snip

Capture the entire screen

After selecting the snip type, click and drag over the area you want to capture.

The screenshot will automatically copy to your clipboard, and a notification preview will appear in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Select the notification to open the screenshot in the Snipping Tool. From here, you can annotate, crop, highlight, or save the screenshot. You can also select Edit in Paint for additional editing options and image markup tools.


Open the Snipping Tool Manually

Select the Start Menu and search for Snipping Tool.

Opening the application directly provides additional features, including:

  • Delayed screenshots

  • Automatic saving options

  • Screen recording in Windows 11

  • Annotation and markup tools

To begin a new screenshot, select New within the Snipping Tool window.​

Alternative Screenshot Shortcuts

You can also use the following Windows shortcuts:

Saved screenshots are typically located in Pictures > Screenshots.

Apple Mac Users

Access

MacOS includes built-in screenshot tools that allow you to capture the entire screen, a selected area, a specific window, or record your screen.

You can access these tools using keyboard shortcuts or the Screenshot toolbar.

Using Keyboard Shortcut

Capture the Entire Screen

Press Shift + Command + 3.

A screenshot of your entire screen will be captured automatically. A thumbnail may appear in the corner of your screen, allowing you to edit the screenshot before it is saved. By default, screenshots are saved to your desktop.

Capture a Specific Window

Open the window you want to capture.

Press Shift + Command + 4, then press the Space Bar. Your pointer will change to a camera icon. Click the window to capture it.


Use the Screenshot Toolbar

Press Shift + Command + 5 to open the Screenshot toolbar.

The Screenshot toolbar provides additional options, including:

Edit and Save Screenshots

After taking a screenshot, a thumbnail may appear in the lower-right corner of the screen. Select the thumbnail to open editing and markup tools, where you can crop, annotate, or share the image before saving.

📌Note

By default, screenshots are saved to the desktop. You can change the save location from the Screenshot toolbar by selecting Options.





Sharing with AdviserLogic Support

Once you have the screenshot saved on your computer, you're ready to share it with our Support team

Compose an Email - Create a new email or an existing AdviserLogic Ticket email.

Attach the Screenshot - Click on the attachment icon (usually represented by a paperclip) and select the screenshot image file you saved. Or paste in the image saved to your clipboard.

Send to AdviserLogic Support - Address the email to [email protected].

Include Relevant Details - Along with the screenshot, provide any additional details regarding the issue you're facing for a quicker resolution.
