Learn how to separate or consolidate portfolios when switching to the same platform in Digital Advice

Overview

We have enhanced the Add/Switch Platform strategy in Digital Advice to give you greater flexibility when switching investments between platforms.

You can now choose whether to consolidate multiple switches into the same platform or keep them as separate portfolios. This improvement helps you review consolidation upfront and reduces the need to create unnecessary scenarios.

The enhancement introduces a new Recommended tab when switching platforms. When you select the New tab for multiple switch transitions into the same platform, the portfolios will either remain separate or be consolidated on the Rebalance screen.

The Add / Switch Platform strategy in AdviserLogic’s Digital Advice module helps you step through replacing an existing investment platform with a new one or recommending a platform where none currently exists. This strategy guides you through selecting the current investment, choosing the new platform, allocating investments, and conducting platform research, all within a compliant workflow.

This strategy is typically used when a client’s investment platform no longer meets their needs (for example, due to fees, features or product access) and you want to propose a recommendation that aligns with their goals.

⚠️Important

  • Support logins have read-only access to scenarios. Only Paraplanners and Advisers can create or edit scenarios.

  • This enhancement applies only to new scenarios created after the production release.

  • If you copy a newly created scenario, the functionality will be available. However, if you copy an older scenario created before the release, the enhancement will not apply.

You do not need to make any changes to existing scenarios.

The mapped SoA template will reflect the portfolio structure exactly as configured in the scenario, whether consolidated or separate.

Access

Please follow the step-by-step instructions below to prepare advice for the Add / Switch Platform Investment Strategy.

📌Note

Before completing this advice, you can model an investment strategy in the Cashflow Module. The modelling can be added to the advice to support your recommendation.

Navigate to Digital Advice > Scenarios and select the + button to create a new scenario.

Select the client the advice is for, or select Joint to create advice for your client and partner. Select the type of advice ( SoA or RoA), then Proceed To Scope.

Then, proceed to the Investment Strategies section and select Add/Switch Platform.

Once you have chosen all the strategies for this scenario, select Proceed from the bottom right of the window.

Add / Switch Platform

Initial or Single Switch

The Add / Switch Platform window is divided into two sections. On the left is a list of existing Investments to switch out of. The right section is not active until the left has been completed.

Choose the Complete or Partial button next to the platforms that investments are to be switched out of.

📌Note

Choose Select Investments for Direct Investments

When choosing Select Investments (Direct Investments) or Partial, you will need to release the amount from each investment

Enter the amount from each investment to be released for rebalance and Save.

Select the fund you wish to switch to from the right-hand section of the screen. Since this is your first switch in the scenario, only the Existing and New tabs will be available. The Recommended tab will not yet be available.

Existing Platform

Will display all available existing platforms that the client's current investments are held in, available to switch into.

You will see a notification that says: You have selected an existing fund as a Switching Into fund. So this fund has been excluded from Switching Out of funds.

New Platform

A dynamic list of platforms that can be selected by scrolling or typing.

Once you have chosen the fund, select whether it is an In-specie transfer by adjusting the toggle in the top right of the window to transfer investments without selling them.

Navigate to the next stage by selecting the Proceed to Investment Portfolio button from the bottom right of the window to move on to the Portfolio Rebalance section.

Additional Switches

Once you have added the initial switch, you can now choose Switch Another Portfolio to create another switch.

After selecting the platform, select Switch another portfolio at the bottom right to perform an additional switch or multiple switches.

You will see a confirmation notification summarising the switches completed in this scenario, including the destination platform and the portfolios switched.

Repeat the process by choosing Complete Switch or Partial Switch next to the platforms the investments are being switched out of.

📌Note

For Direct Investments, choose Select Investments. When you choose Select Investments (Direct Investments) or Partial Switch, you will need to enter the amount to be released from each investment.

Since this is your second (or more) switch in this scenario, you will now see an additional Recommended tab alongside Existing and New.

The Recommended tab will be populated based on the New Platform switches you have already added in this scenario. Existing platforms will not show here.

If you need to move funds to a different platform, choose the New or Existing tabs instead.

💡Understanding the new Recommended Tab

The Recommended tab displays the New platform selected in your previous switch. By hovering over the 🛈 icon, you can view details such as the portfolio switched out of and the dollar amount.

The Recommended tab only displays platforms that represent a change from the client’s current platform structure.

Existing platforms will not appear in this tab. If the switch keeps funds within the same platform, use the Existing tab instead.

You can see your previous Switches by selecting the Reccomended Portfolio button along the top right of the Switch Screen.

How Portfolio Consolidation Works

The way portfolios appear on the Rebalance screen depends on which tab you select the platform from:

  • If you select the same platform from the New tab, a separate card will be created on the Rebalance screen. The balances will not be combined.

  • If you select the same platform from the Recommended tab, the portfolios will be consolidated. A single card will appear on the Rebalance screen showing the combined balance of all switches into that platform.

You may continue creating switches as long as the client has funds available to switch. Once you are ready to progress to the rebalance stage, select Proceed.

Portfolio Rebalance

The Rebalance Portfolio screen is divided into three distinct panels, each supporting the platform switching and rebalancing process.

Left Panel – Recommended Platforms and Available Funds

This panel displays the client’s available investments that can be switched. Each card shows the platform name, account owner, available amount, and balance to invest. When multiple switches are performed, separate recommendation cards will appear here depending on whether the platform was selected from the New or Recommended tab. The highlighted card indicates the currently selected portfolio for rebalancing.

⚠️Important

The selection you make in this panel controls what is displayed in both the middle and right panels.

Middle Panel – Portfolio Rebalance Details

This panel displays the details for the portfolio selected in the left panel. It shows the total recommendation amount, available balance, and any remaining balance for that specific investment.

Below this, the Underlying Investments table lists the existing holdings for the selected platform and allows you to adjust the recommended allocation. Columns typically include Existing, Recommended, Transaction amount, and Proportion percentage. You can also select a Model Portfolio/SMA if required.

When you select a different investment tile in the left panel, this section updates automatically to reflect that selection.

Right Panel – Asset Allocation Graph

This panel presents a visual comparison of the asset allocation for the investment selected in the left panel. It displays Existing, Recommended, and Strategic allocations across asset classes such as Cash, Australian Shares, International Shares, Property, Fixed Interest, and Others.

The asset allocation graph updates dynamically based on the tile selected in the left panel, ensuring you are always reviewing the correct portfolio. The Asset Allocation Comparison button at the top allows you to further analyse allocation differences before proceeding to Research.

📌Note

  • When switching out of a fund partially or switching into an existing fund, the existing investments will show in the Underlying Investments middle section.

  • When performing a complete switch into a new fund, all the funds will be available to reinvest.

Rebalance Released Funds

If additional funds need to be released for reinvestment, you can sell existing holdings directly from the middle panel.

To do this, locate the relevant investment in the Underlying Investments table and enter 0 in the Proportion (%) column. After entering the value, click outside the field to trigger the recalculation. This action will release the monetary value from that holding and make it available for reallocation.

Once funds have been released, you can add a new underlying investment manually using the blue + plus button next to the Underlying Investments heading on the top left of the investments table.

You can choose to add:

These investment types can be added individually or in combination.

📌Note

  • When you allocate 100% of the available funds, the Underlying Investments + button will disappear, as there are no remaining funds to assign.

  • If you need to make funds available again, reduce the allocation amount for one or more investments. Once the total allocation drops below 100%, the Underlying Investments + button will reappear.

  • It is important to ensure that 100% of the available funds are allocated before proceeding.

Select Save beneath the Underlying Investments list to confirm your changes, or click Reset to clear your allocations and start again.

You can also select a previously created Model Portfolio or SMA using the options displayed above the investments table on the right.

Regardless of whether new funds are to be released, the Remaining Balance in the top right of the section shows the amount available to be redistributed.

After making your selections and confirming the allocation, click Save to apply the changes.

📌Note

Upon completion and saving, a green line appears above the platform tile to indicate the Switch is done.

Research

After reviewing the Rebalance screen, select the Proceed to Research button from the bottom right of the window.

The Research screen is specific to the selected client and switch within the scenario. It displays the platform being switched into and allows you to compare it against the platform being switched out of, as well as add additional platforms for comparison.

The comparison functionality mirrors the standalone Investment Research tool available in Advice Tools, within the context of the current Digital Advice scenario.

If multiple switches have been created, you can use the drop-down at the top left to toggle between each switch. You can compare the platform switching into versus the platform switching out of based on your selection.

You can reset any entered values by choosing the Reset button from the top right of the research window.

Review Fees

Select Proceed to Fees at the bottom right of the Research screen to navigate to the fee comparison. On the Fees screen, you can compare Ongoing Fees and Transactional Fees between the outgoing and incoming platforms.

The Fees screen functions in the same way as the Research screen and mirrors the standalone Fee Research tool available in Advice Tools, within the context of the current Digital Advice scenario.

The screen is specific to the selected client and switch. It displays the platform being switched into alongside the platform being switched out of, allowing you to directly compare fees.

You also have the option to add additional platforms for comparison, in addition to the recommended platform, by selecting New Platforms.

If multiple switches have been created, you can use the drop-down menu at the top of the screen to toggle between each switch.

To review Investment Fees & Costs or Platform Fees and costs for the underlying investments, use the relevant Fee Type drop-down option from the top left of the window for the selected switch.

Final Review and Finish Advice

After reviewing fees, select the Proceed to Review button from the bottom right of the window to confirm the assets switching out of and into each platform.

On the Review screen, you can confirm all details entered throughout the switching process.

The page displays tiles summarising each switch. Each tile shows the platform being switched into, the total switched amount, the platform being switched out of, and the underlying investments with their allocated amounts.

If multiple switches were created, each will appear as a separate tile reflecting how they were structured in the scenario, whether consolidated or separate.

To make changes, hover over the relevant tile and select the pencil (Edit) icon. This will take you back to the appropriate section to update the advice Use the eye icon to edit the template.

At the bottom of the screen, you can enter a Summary of Advice to provide additional context or commentary before proceeding.

Once you have reviewed and confirmed the details, select Proceed to Disclosure Fees from the bottom right of the window to continue.

If you haven’t set up the advice fees previously, you will need to do so when reaching this page

Set Portfolio Advice Fees

When you reach the Disclosure Fees screen, you must ensure that portfolio advice fees have been configured before finishing the advice.

If you have not previously set up advice fees for the selected portfolio, you will need to do so at this stage.

A pop-up window will show, displaying each portfolio included in the scenario, along with the portfolio balance.

For each portfolio, you can select an existing preset fee structure or configure a custom fee if required.

Once you have matched each investment to a fee type, select Save from the top right of the pop-up .

💡Set Up or Edit Portfolio Advice Fee Structures

At the top of the pop-up window that opens, choose how the fee will be calculated:

  • Single Tier Calculation – Applies one fee rate across the entire portfolio balance.

  • Multi-Tier Calculation – Applies different fee rates across balance ranges (tiers).

Select the appropriate option based on your fee agreement.

Set the Upfront Fee

Under the Upfront Fee section, define how the upfront advice fee will be calculated.

For each tier, complete the following fields:

If using Multi Tier Calculation, click the + icon to add additional tiers. Ensure that tier ranges do not overlap and that they cover the intended balance range.

Use the bin icon to remove a tier if required. Select Reset to clear the section and start again.

Fees can be manually added by clicking the blue + icon next to the relevant heading, such as Advice Fees or Other Fees.

Enter a clear Fee Description, select the appropriate Owner from the client’s available entities, and input the Amount. Once completed, click Save to apply the fee.

You can review or edit a manually added fee by hovering over the relevant fee line and selecting the pencil (Edit) icon. This allows you to update the Fee Description, change the Owner, or adjust the Amount as required. Once updated, click Save to confirm the changes.

If a fee is no longer required, select the bin icon to delete it.

If you need to update an existing fee arrangement, you can also use the Set Portfolio Advice Fee button to adjust the structure before finalising the advice.

After confirming the fees, review the Adviser Split, AFSL Split, and Practice Split amounts displayed on the Disclosure Fees screen.

⚠️Important

  • Fee splits must be configured before the advice is created. If changes are made to the fee split after a scenario has been generated, those updates will not apply to the existing scenario. To reflect the updated fee split, you will need to create a new scenario.

  • Portfolio advice fees must be configured before you can successfully finalise the advice.

When all details are correct, select Finish Advice from the bottom right of the window to complete the scenario.
