Overview

Model Portfolios in AdviserLogic allow you to define a collection of investments that can be applied consistently across client portfolios. These are often used to group preferred investments, such as ETFs or SMAs, that your practice regularly uses.

Model Portfolios are particularly useful when an SMA is not available in the Morningstar ecosystem, or when dealing with private or custom investment options.

Using Model Portfolios helps streamline your advice process and ensures consistency in asset allocation. Once created, Model Portfolios can be used in Digital Advice scenarios and directly within the Portfolio tab of a client record.

Model Portfolio vs Custom Product

AdviserLogic also supports Custom Products, which may be more suitable in certain situations.

Custom Product

Suitable for SMAs with many underlying investments. Non-indexed investments like Gold, Crypto etc.

Used for existing client assets in the Superannuation and Assets Screen.

Simplifies management by treating the SMA as a grouped product. Ideal for focusing on the overall structure and performance without detailing individual fees. Appears as a single item in Digital Advice.

Model Portfolio

Recommended for detailed tracking of each underlying investment.

Used for research and reccomendations in the Digital Advice module.

Offers transparency into each component, including buy/sell costs and ICRs. Best suited when the SMA is private or managed by the Licensee who controls the allocations and fees.

Use Custom Product when simplicity and high-level grouping is the goal. Use Model Portfolio when you need transparency, granular control, and detailed fee analysis.

📌Note

Custom products can also be added to Model portfolios for additional customisation

Applying a Model Portfolio to Research and Recommendations in Digital Advice

Once all investments have been added and the percentage allocations total 100%, the system will automatically calculate the individual investment amounts.

These amounts are derived from the total dollar value assigned to the Model Portfolio in the Digital Advice screens, distributing the value proportionally based on your set allocations.

Once your Model Portfolio is created and saved, you can apply it directly within the Digital Advice module, both in the Research screens and the Scenario screens.

This allows you to quickly recommend a consistent investment strategy without manually selecting individual investments each time.

Digital Advice Fee Research

In the Digital Advice Tools Fee Research screens, Model Portfolios can be selected when comparing and researching super or investment options, helping to assess how your preferred asset mix performs relative to alternatives.

From a client record, navigate to Digital Advice > Advice Tools > Platform Fees/Super Fees

Add the comparison amount in the top left of the screen.

Add the Platforms for comparison.

The Add Underlying Investments or Model Portfolio window will open, from here you can select the previously created Model Portfolio from the Portfolio/SMA field in the middle of the window.

When a Model Portfolio is selected, the values will be applied to the entire Comparison Amount. This amount is editable and will be shown as the Recommended amount for each investment, calculated based on the percentages defined in your Model Portfolio allocation. These values appear under the (%) column, allowing you to review and adjust the recommendations as needed.

📌Note

Percentage values in the (%) column can only be edited within the Model Portfolio screen

Selecting Add will apply the model portfolio to your fee comparison.

Digital Advice Scenario Recommendations

In the Digital Advice Scenario screens, Model Portfolios can be selected when comparing and researching super or investment options, helping to assess how your preferred asset mix performs relative to alternatives. The system will then distribute the investment value automatically, based on the percentage allocations you’ve set up in the Model Portfolio.

From a client record, navigate to Digital Advice > Scenarios > Add New Scenario > Select Strategies

Superannuation Strategies

  • Super Rollover

  • Rebalance Portfolio

Investment Strategies

  • Add/Switch Platform

  • Rebalance Portfolio

  • Buy/Sell Investments

You can choose the previously created Model Portfolio from the Model Portfolio/SMA dropdown.

When a Model Portfolio is selected, the values will be applied to the entire Recommended amount if the Rebalance Total Available Amount toggle is switched on. This amount will be shown as the Recommended amount column for each investment, calculated based on the percentages defined in your Model Portfolio allocation. These values appear under the (%) column, allowing you to review and adjust the recommendations as needed.

Selecting Add will apply the model portfolio values to the scenario, automatically selling any pre-existing values.

Selecting Save will apply the Model Portfolio to the strategy and the Asset Allocation screen will now reflect the Model Portfolio.

This simplifies the modelling process, ensures consistency in advice, and supports accurate calculation of fees, returns, and projections.

FAQ's

What is a Model Portfolio used for in AdviserLogic?

Model Portfolios allow you to group a collection of preferred investments, such as ETFs, SMAs, managed funds, or cash, into a single structure. This can be reused across multiple client portfolios, streamlining recommendations and ensuring consistency.

How is a Model Portfolio different from a Custom Product?

Model Portfolios provide transparency over each underlying investment, including fees and asset allocation. Custom Products are better suited for grouped investments (like private SMAs) where you don’t need to break down each component.

What happens if the percentage allocations in my Model Portfolio don’t add up to 100%?

Can I edit a Model Portfolio after it's used in a scenario?

Yes, you can edit a Model Portfolio at any time. However, changes won’t retroactively apply to previously used scenarios, they’ll only affect future use.

Troubleshooting

Use this guide to resolve common issues when creating, managing, or applying Model Portfolios in AdviserLogic.

I can’t see the Model Portfolio setup screen

Cause: You may not have the correct access level.
Solution: Only users with Administrative Tools access can view and manage Model Portfolios. Contact your Practice Administrator to request access.

The system won’t let me save my Model Portfolio

Cause: The total percentage of all investments exceeds 100%.
Solution: Check the Portfolio Investment List and ensure all allocations add up to exactly 100%. If they exceed this, a warning will appear and the portfolio will not save.

My Custom Product isn’t showing in the dropdown

Cause: The Custom Product hasn’t been created yet.
Solution: You must first create the Custom Product via Tools > Administrative Tools > Product Setup > Custom Products before you can add it to a Model Portfolio.

The percentage values don’t match the dollar amounts in Digital Advice

Cause: The Comparison Amount or Recommended Amount in Digital Advice hasn’t been set or edited.
Solution: In the Digital Advice screen, confirm the Comparison Amount or toggle on Rebalance Total Available Amount. The system will use this total to calculate dollar allocations based on your Model Portfolio’s percentages.

I accidentally deleted a Model Portfolio

Cause: The Delete function was used and confirmed.
Solution: Unfortunately, deleted Model Portfolios cannot be recovered. You will need to recreate it manually. Consider using Save As to duplicate portfolios in the future before making major edits.

I can’t change the percentage values in Digital Advice

Cause: Percentages in the Digital Advice screens are driven by the Model Portfolio setup.
Solution: To update these values, go back to the Model Portfolio setup screen, adjust the allocations, and save. Return to the scenario to reapply the portfolio if needed.

My portfolio includes a greyed-out cash account

Cause: The total allocation is less than 100%.
Solution: The system assigns the unallocated portion as a placeholder cash account. You can either allocate the remaining percentage to other investments or leave it as cash, depending on your strategy.

Changes I made to a Model Portfolio aren’t reflected in the client scenario

Cause: Edits to a Model Portfolio don’t retroactively update applied scenarios.
Solution: After editing a portfolio, reapply it to the scenario by selecting it again. This will pull through the updated structure.

I can't find my Model Portfolio in the Digital Advice scenario dropdown

Cause: The portfolio may not have been saved correctly or is missing required investment data.
Solution: Double-check that the Model Portfolio was saved with at least one investment and valid percentage allocations. Revisit the setup screen and confirm.

My allocations keep resetting after saving

Cause: Likely due to exceeding 100% without noticing, which prevents saving.
Solution: Carefully monitor the total allocation percentage before clicking Save. Use the system’s greyed-out cash line to track the remaining percentage.
